As you know, in this course we are using the idea that the History of the United States is the story of the constant interaction of unity and diversity. So far in the readings and short videos, we’ve explored examples of diversity. For this assignment, you will watch a short video that introduces a theme that will actually be a source of unity that begins with Colonial America, but continues throughout the semester (and which is even with us today).
In this assignment, you need to write two paragraphs of roughly equal length that combined should fill close to one page (and NOT be longer than one full page). As with all assignments and essays, use arial font 11, and double-space the text.
In your first paragraph, you should discuss in your own words what you learned about the nature of the British “Constitutional” or “Limited” Monarchy, and the British attitude towards what makes government legitimate, as discussed in the short video.
In the second paragraph, show how The Mayflower Compact is an example of what you discussed in the first paragraph. The document can be difficult to understand, but try to give quotes in your paragraph from the actual document as evidence that the Compact is indeed a specific example of that general tradition in English government that you discuss in your first paragraph.
You can read The Mayflower Compact by pausing the video when the text appears, or by reading it on the Power Point Slides in this link.
I hope you find the document interesting, and I look forward to reading what you write!
P.S. The rubric is included to see how the grade for this assignment is weighted.
