ENG157 Week2 The Civil Rights Era and Multicultural Literature
Multicultural Literature and the Civil Rights Era Assignment Options
ENG157 Week2: Choose one of the following to complete your Week 2 assignment:
Option A
Although not all of your Week 2 readings are directly affiliated with the Civil Rights Movement, many of the writers you have read this week engage with themes of resistance to the status quo. How did they do this? This week’s assignment is an opportunity to demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of Civil Rights-era multicultural literature.
Write a 700- to 1,050-word essay that includes discussion of the following:
- A summative description of two works of multicultural literature produced during the Civil Rights era.
- A description of the subjects or themes of each of your two selected works and how these themes are characteristic of Civil Rights-era multicultural literature.
- How your authors employed strategies of resistance in their works; in other words, how did they challenge the status quo in their form, (where did they stage plays, for example) and in their establishment of identity that countered expected norms of behavior?
Refer to your Week 2 readings and videos as resources for this assignment. If you would like to perform additional research, consider using the Bloom’s Literature, Literary Reference Center Plus, or Literary Resource Center databases. Links to these databases are available on your Week 2 Electronic Reserve Reading page.
Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.
Submit your assignment to the Assignment Files tab.
Option B
With Option B you have an opportunity for a creative writing exercise. This week you learned about the work of Luis Valdez and viewed a clip of the play, “A Raisin in the Sun.” Demonstrate how a play can be used as a tool of social reform, or carry a message related to social justice issues. If you choose this option you may want to use the Literary Reference Center Plus, or Literary Resource Center databases to research the general format and style applied in plays.
Select a theme and subject characteristic of Civil-Rights era multicultural literature.
Write a 2- to 3-page scripted scene that includes the following:
- A list of the characters in the scene
- Action and/or dialogue that demonstrates your knowledge of the themes and subjects of the Civil Rights era (you may set your play during that era or our own)
Format your assignment according to appropriate course-level APA guidelines.
