Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Prepare:
Before completing this discussion forum, review the Week 5 Instructor Guidance in your online classroom and
- Read Chapter 11: Public Policy.
- Read Chapter 12: Mass Media.
- Read The Digital Commercialisation of US Politics—2020 and Beyond(Links to an external site.).
- Read How Do You Solve a Problem Like Misinformation?(Links to an external site.)
- Watch Truth & Denial: Searching for Information in the Digital Era(Links to an external site.) (0:00 to 27:30; the rest of the video is optional).
Reflect:
The promise of the internet is greater democratization of information. In some ways, that is true. We can find and connect with family members, friends, and even strangers who live far away in ways never possible in the past thanks to the internet. We have access to more information than any people before us thanks to the internet. This class—where students can come together to learn, no matter where in the country, or even in the world, they are located—is possible thanks to the internet.
However, consider recent past elections, especially in 2020, 2016, and even 2012. Think about the ways that the internet has changed how we get information about candidates and how we discuss candidates with others. Reflect on how the internet has affected the political process, including the ability of candidates to communicate with voters, the ability of political campaigns to organize supporters, and the ability to spread misinformation and disinformation as well as conspiracy theories.
Write:
Based on the video that you watched and the two articles that you read:
- Discuss at least two challenges to the functioning of democracy in the United States in the digital era.
- Explain at least one current legislative, judicial, social, or technological option for addressing each of the two challenges that you identified. In addition, discuss why they are or are not sufficiently effective and if there are questions about whether they are constitutionally sound.
- Describe what you did or did not find persuasive about the options that you discussed to contend with the challenges that you identified in the articles or video.
Your initial post must be at least 300 words. If you are citing statistics or outside sources for your examples, please reference the source with an APA reference at the end of your post.
