Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.
Prepare:
Before you begin working on this discussion forum, review the Week 2 Instructor Guidance in your online classroom and
- Read Chapter 3: Federalism.
- Read Chapter 4: Congress and Policy Making.
- Read Republics Large and Small(Links to an external site.).
- Watch Key Constitutional Concepts(Links to an external site.) (from 0:00-22:56—the rest of the video is optional).
You may find completing your The U.S. Constitution and Federalism learning activity helpful prior to working on this discussion forum.
Reflect: Reflect on the experimentation in the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution as the authors worked to create a new form of government. Consider that the two documents, the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution, were the direct result of their authors’ experiences. What were the main fears of the authors as they crafted these frameworks for a government? Is it more interesting that they felt the need to replace the first constitution or that the second one has lasted so long?
Write:
Based on the information you learned from your textbook, the article, and the video,
- Identify at least two problems that the early United States encountered as it functioned under the Articles of Confederation and the solutions that the authors of the Constitution agreed upon to address the problems that you identified.
- Explain one main issue about which the authors came into conflict while writing the Constitution and how it was resolved.
- Discuss one fact or concept from the article that you found interesting or surprising.
Your initial post must be at least 300 words. If you are citing statistics or outside sources for your examples, please reference the source with an APA reference at the end of your post.
